I am not a GPT and I won’t let one reflect me…
The amount of AI-produced, bland, waffle content appearing in my social feed is becoming monotonous. Makes me wonder who is writing it…
GPT’s can produce well structured and well written content in seconds. Putting it to good use is a no-brainer - Instant social platform content, newsletters, etc with little to no effort, regardless of your writing skills and knowledge.
But there are glaring negatives to using AI to write your content - Whilst AI is excellent at structure and clarity, it often lacks depth, perspective and most importantly, the writing traits and language of the supposed author. It sounds right, but it rarely feels right. As a result, many posts are increasingly published with content that is ‘polished’ but bland.
So, think hard and put some effort into your posts. They are a reflection of you:
Posters are no longer just competing with each other, they’re competing with algorithms which product content that is largely homogenous - Use them unfettered if you wish to be portrayed as homogenous
Well articulated perspective and originality stand out - Posts should offer a distinct point of view, something reflective of your skills, values and experience - Things AI can’t replicate but which can be validated reasonably easily if the reader knows you or looks at your profile
Don’t become a GPT editor - Prompting AI and then rewriting or refining won’t always hide laziness. The skill isn’t just in drafting good content, but knowing which bits to keep and which to throw
Trust is critical - Readers of LI posts are becoming more skeptical - As a poster, you won’t get too many chance to retain readers if you publish content that is suspiciously not your own
So how can you tell if the post you are reading is a product of silicon rather than a human?
It reads like a textbook - Logically structured, grammatically perfect, but emotionally benign. Real writing usually has imperfect phrasing, surprising insights, even grammar and spelling mistakes and profanity
Generic metaphors or cliches - AI loves corporatespeak like “game changer,” “spearheaded,” or “navigating the digital landscape”, but then again, so do many Li users…Avoid it like the plague
Repetition - If you see the same or similar posts across accounts, it’s probably because the posters use the same GPT’s and similar prompts. Or the accounts are fake and maintained by the same person
No personal nuances - Good human writing usually reflects the writer - Look at the poster’s profile and see if the language is consistent
Everyone knows AI is continuing to evolve rapidly. So too is its use by the lazy, the inexperienced and the nefarious, to represent themselves as something or someone they may not be. So next time you read something that feels just a little too polished and beige, ask yourself “Did a human write this, or just post it?
